I usually don’t watch qualifying but I did for the last two races and, according to the official data, Verstappen was driving closer to his cars full potential than Hamilton at both tracks.

I think handling of “normal” vehicles has vastly improved in general. The responsiveness and body control of modern Accords and Camrys are easily closer to 20 year old sports cars than to 20 year old Accords and Camrys.

There’s actually more available energy in lower octane fuel but it’s more prone to knock. There is zero advantage to running higher octane than is needed to prevent knock in your engine. A new engine will run best on the recommended octane.
