I saw a news report that she stepped in front of the car, although that is not confirmed.

She wasn’t actually riding the bike at the time, that’s why they called her a pedestrian and not a cyclist. :)

Jaywalking isn’t any more dangerous just because you have autonomous cars on the road. If anything it’s less dangerous.

This was no unfortunate accident. It was a stupid robot - sent out by Uber - who blindly crushed a pedestrian. The responsibility lies with the agent who decides to let loose immature technology on an unsuspecting world.

You can’t really tell a human, “Chill, and let the robot Jesus take the wheel”, and then turn on a dime and say, “Oh fuck, human, take over, a lady on a bike just ran out in front of us, and I’m confused!”

Evidence so far suggests 2 is correct but 1 is not.

The police chief has now suggested the accident would have been difficult to avoid for either an autonomous system or human driver.

I honestly don’t know how much they have done in a controlled environment, but I somehow don’t think it has been enough.

The last thing we need is people clamoring for knee-jerk legislation in response to an accident where hardly any facts have been published yet.

It’s a little early to be getting angry at anyone in particular.

Not the greatest comparison. You get to keep the car when you’re done making payments, and can use it for a variety of things besides just commuting.

Or, you start with just, you know, regular trains running on regular lines.

And we can do it, we just don’t want to, because we want to rely on our cars.

California is trying high-speed rail within their own state. Not working out very well so far.

Like enforcing the passenger limit on HOV lanes? That’s a pretty basic traffic law. In fact, there are dozens of signs every few hundred yards reminding you of the time-frame as well as the passenger limit to be in the lane.

Me: Thanks for the note about the taillight. Can I see the radar output showing I was speeding?

I don’t think accidents or obstructions give anyone the authority to be in a lane they don’t otherwise belong in.

Instead we’ve placated the masses with a teeny break and snuck in millions in savings for millionaires and billionaires.

There will ALWAYS be people out there who need money more than you. Do you feel pain when you get a raise? Would you feel pain if you won the lottery?
