The only other people I know who stream stuff to their TVs or speakers use Airplay. I can't think of anyone but a few technophiles like ourselves who would know how to set up a DLNA or other system.

It's possible the Apple TV was downloading a 720p version (2nd gen Apple TV?) while iTunes was attempting to download a 1080p version since they recently introduced those.
