Interestingly, the movie was based on the autobiography of the subject (Jordan Belfort). So it's his story, from his point of view. It's made very clear in the movie that his version of events is extremely skewed from reality.

"The Perfect Vagina" excellent documentary that talks about this, specific to the UK. It's worth watching and only gross in a few parts. NSFW obviously.
