His parents evidently relocated to Ithaca with him.
A followup for any Cornell hopefuls, the POC community at Cornell is really great here. Not that I would recommend Cornell to everyone, but spaces like the Latino Living Center and Ujamma and groups like BSU, MEChA, First in Class, and so many others are v active and a godsend. The climate as a whole is not perfect by…
It’s hard to quantify humanities in a way that lets you sign off on “Okay, this kid knows the material, time to bump them up to the next level” in the same way that math does. Kids in public middle and high schools take math in, what — Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trig somewhere on the side, Calc, and then the kid…
You never hear about those genius kids going to school to study the humanities. In our area it’s always math, science or piano (the big local school is known for their piano program). They also always live at home. My husband came to the US at 14 to attend our liberal arts strong alma mater and get a BS in…
I have taught middle school for 15 years. Stories like this make me angry. I don't give a shit if he's academically ready for college. He isn't ready for college in far more ways that actually matter.
My dad went to Princeton for engineering. Being raised by someone who went to an Ivy League school really takes the glow off of those supposedly elite institutions. Just last week on a family trip, he, an Ivy educated engineer, couldn’t get the cabin’s windows to open. He was turning the knob the wrong way.
This stuff kind of weirds me out. Education has a big “develop socially with people who are more or less your social peers” component, and, at least based on this story... I guess I wonder where this kids gets to hang out with people his age.
Send us a postcard from Ithaca, will you?
As a Cornell graduate, I concur with your snark ;)
lol
I visited a friend there once during the winter.
I heard Lindy West on a podcast this week say something similar about how when she really started start understanding intersectional feminism is when she started understanding that some black people just may not like her, ever, and respect that even though she thought of her self as a Nice White Lady. And them…
I heard something from Aimee Mann that I really liked, along the lines of “people are entitled to dislike you, and their reason why is none of your business.” Maybe a person is shallow and only talks to models; maybe you have an uncanny resemblance to someone who bullied him/her as a kid. As long as someone isn’t…
no she is referring to the “it” as herself which is why i wrote that she was deploying black men as “both object and misogynist,” although i’m mad now that i didn’t write “both object and objectifier,” as parallelism would have been better writing. fuck.
the entire staff has turned over almost twofold since then
Fuck all those toothless crackheads!!!! They’re probably black anyway! They’re probably wondering if I’m skinny enough to fuck anyway! They’re probably doing crack because they know how amazing I am and yet how high my standards are and that they can never be with me so they’re so sad! Fuck them!
Having experienced both a burst ovarian cyst and a rape, I wouldn’t consider them to be comparable experiences. And I resent the fuck out of the idea that because I or other women have gone through X, I should be totally down with any jokes about Y. Maybe some people can. Others can’t and shouldn’t have to.
ATTENTION WHITE SISTREN: BLACK MEN DO NOT OWE YOU THEIR ATTENTIONS, SEXUAL OR OTHERWISE. PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL OF THEIR BODILY AUTONOMY, ESPECIALLY GIVEN HISTORICAL DENIAL OF SAID BY YOUR FUCKING PEOPLE.
Oh, so we don’t have to fight stupid, victim-blaming, punching-down rape jokes in comedy anymore (and Lindy’s book comes to mind in doing its share of that work) because we’re “so strong” and “queens”? So victims (and any human being with a modicum of decency) don’t need to fight for the right to be viewed as humans?…
