I think that just goes to show the stigma of the word mental illness.

Sinead was sent to a Magdalene Laundry as a teenager. She was a direct victim of the Catholic Church.

The question itself is one of the many reasons I loathe Phil and his fans. This woman is troubled and suffering and he reduces all of her choices by linking them to her mental health.

I’m around the same age as Sinead O’Connor, and was also raised Catholic. When she ripped up the photo it was absolutely a sane and gutsy thing to do, albeit not great for her career.

I saw her on this tour (with hair.) here is one of my favorites, it is devastating live a capella. Lift a glass and spark a solid at the scattering of my ashes to

Even as a young Catholic girl, surrounded by critical adults, I got what she was doing. Agree or disagree but it fucking made sense.

In 1988, in Newfoundland, sex abuse charges were laid against a Catholic priest, and an orphanage run by the Christian brothers (a Catholic order) was investigated for physical and sexual abuse allegations going back at least 20 years. My memory is not exact on the timing, but the scandal and allegations started

I think it’s really not talked about how much that moment may have played in exposing the church, the abuses that they were undertaking, and had been for years. Knowing now it was more about the aforementioned Magdelene laundries, but I know, even as a 17-year-old teen who wasn’t much into religion, it made me curious

Assuming she actually does need in-patient psychiatric treatment, what reason (other than ratings) does Phil have for putting her on TV either while or before she has received what she needs?

I love the old traditional songs. Sinead knows, or knew how to sing them:

She recorded a full reggae album about ten years ago in Kingston and donated a portion of the profits to Rastafari elder community there. I remember an aunt of mine going to a concert of hers a few years ago but she was not happy that Sinead played none of her well known stuff just exclusively the reggae material. Not

After which he said “I would have given her such a smack.”

This.

And then the following week Joe Pesci fucking taped it back together and -unironically - modestly held it up to show the audience. After which he said “I would have given her such a smack.”

Amazing quote and context, thank you!

I don’t think anyone has ever issued her an apology, even though - when you hear her reasoning behind the stunt - she was in the right. A decade before the public at large acknowledged abuse and cover-ups within/by the Catholic Church, Sinead called them out on it and tried to bring it out of the shadows.

And it’s not

Dr Phil and Sinead - what the fuck?

Totally! We are definitely still that provincial. Without a child sex scandal people wouldn’t have gotten over that moment. Some still haven’t! Even the non-Catholics were like, SO DISRESPECTFUL SHE MUST BE POSSESSED!

I do remember sitting and watching that SNL episode with my Dad (who was a fan, cause he listened to fairly decent music). He’s also a practicing Catholic. I remember him being deeply upset.

It definitely said so much that people in this country were so shocked. It was before the sexual abuse coverup scandal. I really think we’re still that provincial.
