Not in Texas. Probate lawyer here. Spouse gets to share the real estate with kids, if they are not children of the marriage. Separate property and community property are treated differently as well. Long story.

Thank you for so much insight! I have often wondered about this...I’m a product of Catholic, public and private schools myself. Both my parents had advanced degrees but I can’t imagine them being able to teach their kids anything at the grade school level — they weren’t interested and had no patience.
