I agree with you about Precious, but I don't think Beasts of the Southern Wild falls into the same category.

I'm pretty sure that's just not true. There were a whole lot more deaths during the inquisition than the British reformation.

She isn't actually complaining about it, is she? Maybe they don't do it all that much, because she's not that into it.

I don't think either one of them is a great writer, by any stretch of the imagination. I think Franzen gets taken much more seriously than his writing merits. But he's also clearly a douche, while Jennifer Weiner seems like a perfectly nice person. Or at least she has the social skills and good sense to pretend to be

As a reluctant Alabama resident, I'm going to guess that the no midwifes at home births thing is to do with OBGYN's doing their best to prevent midwives from practicing at all. For once, it's not about misogyny so much as it is about a petty professional turf war.

That totally makes sense. Yet I think I find it even more maddening that those people insist there's a connection between vaccines and autism even though ALL THE SCIENCE says there isn't.

I don't have any plans to get married anytime soon, or much interest in doing so ever, so it's entirely possible I'm missing something here. But really, I don't especially like shopping for anything with other people. If I were to get married, I just think I'd want to go dress shopping on my own. I can think of maybe

I'm not at all sure the level of parenting here isn't such that the surviving children might not be better off with someone else. Their odds of surviving to adulthood would improve, if nothing else.

I'm so fucking glad Emma Stone got nominated. I've always liked her, but she's just completely, ridiculously, perfect in Birdman. She makes the ending, which could have been iffy, gorgeous

Enact and enforce the patriarchy? The day this constitutes significant enactment and enforcement of the patriarchy, I'll consider the possibility that post-feminism might be a thing.

No, but I'm sure there are unstated expectations as to your appearance. Unless you work from home, maybe, and never, ever, interact in person with colleagues or customers/clients.

I think there's a third perspective. More yes, this is ridiculous, but also, who cares? These girls know what they're signing up for when they join. USC has like 41,000 students. If they don't like it, they can leave, and find themselves entirely different social circles.

How does one even make waves happen? I have naturally curly/wavy/frizzy hair I usually straighten. If I wanted nice waves, I think I'd have to use a curling iron, maybe?

I so don't want to like her. But apparently it isn't up to me.

I'm with you. I never really saw the point of my younger brother. Now that he's become a McCain/Romney voter, he's basically dead to me.
