“The plot for The Super Mario Bros Movie is paper-thin. Narratively, the characters are static bordering on inert; there’s no arc or growth to any of them. It’s just one action set piece to the next; your enjoyment is intimately tied to your pre-existing knowledge of these characters and your ability to recognize a

Looking out for all the references in this movie was a great time and I’m sure there were plenty I’d missed. I haven’t seen anybody mention the shot when Peach is running through the obstacle course and she briefly runs while holding up her dress at the front, which I felt was a throwback to her Super Mario Bros. 2

Me too but as a proper nerd I will complain the whole time.

Kotaku is at war with Seth Rogan. Kotaku has always been at war with Seth Rogan.

I am an adult who grows with mario games. And watching this with my kid and we both can relate together all the things in the movie are really the best feeling as a father.

I always knew the movie would be a nostalgia trip and references and I think that’s what it needed to be. Surprised to hear this kind of review from a video gamer and be on the side of critics. Cause..

It’s going to be hilarious (already is) to watch Kotaku as a whole completely ignore that they ever had such a site-wide hissyfit about Pratt.

Considering how much they bashed every aspect of the voice cast, the trailers, etc it is obvious this is just used to drum up clicks to their site. “Hey this movie is going to suck” followed by “Hey this movie wasn’t what we were hoping it was going to be” is exactly the type of logic I find this site dominated by

What a weird thing to say about considering the biggest complaint this site has had from day 1 is that Chris Pratt is voicing the lead instead of the guy they recognize from their childhood.

...are we really going to write entire articles now about how we somehow expected the Super Mario Movie to be anything more than just a full-length nostalgia bonanza??

I just watched this in the theater and it was amazing. I don’t know what people were expecting from a Mario movie aside from a fun story set in the Mario world. It wasn’t ever going to be the next Citizen Kane.

“made in a lab” Oh you silly summer child, how do you think movies happen?

This does explain my early love for Vampire the Masquerade

Okay now I am finally starting to wonder if it’s an industry wide agreement to make this movie out to be the antichrist. I’ve seen plenty of it so far but now it seems like it’s trying to get in your face how awful this film is.

The movie is directed at children. If my kids love it, and they will because Mario, then it’s a winner.

People expecting the next Whiplash or LOTR will be severely disappointed.

I’m just saying that those authors at least had the trappings of maturity, where you could look at it (at least from the perspective of a 12 year old) and say, “this is serious fantasy for adults

Oh same, it's just funny thinking back on those books now.

Fair enough. But see my comments on Goodkind down the thread 😂

What is this word salad supposed to mean?

Pro-tip to all the parents out there or even just people who interact with preteen boys.
