I'm a "read enough about it to not want to do it" guy. I am more than happy with my XT10G telescope, SkySafari to control and move it, and visual observation.
There are a lot of "prime focus" options out there, including holders for iPhones. The big problem with using a D-SLR on reflector telescopes is the weight of the camera. Reflector (Newtonian) scopes give you more aperture for the buck, so you get more light.

I thought about getting into astrophotography, but I don't have the desire to spend $5K for an entry level setup, then spend eight hours outside at night, while never getting to actually look through the telescope, just to get pictures to which people will inevitably say "that's not as good as the Hubble".

I concur with your assessments of both devices. The Nexus One Car Dock had Bluetooth incorporated, as well. (It wasn't that useful in my XTerra, but in a quiet car it worked well.)
