    This has always been the rub in the debate over digital ownership — even when it’s a physical medium, we never truly own it forever. Those of us of a certain age knew this when we replaced our VHS with DVDs, and those who replaced DVDs with Blu-ray. It’s always been temporary.

    Yeah, his visual style is often garish and ugly. It relies so heavily on green screen artificiality that it often ages before our eyes. Repeated melodramatic slo-mos doesn’t make a film beautiful

    Nobody wants to revisit Cameron’s aesthetic for spaceships or the Aliens. I kinda get the feeling that’s because the movie just doesn’t look that good in HD compared to the original.

I don’t want to shit on the production values — yeah, the CGI around the suit looks a bit cheap, but they seem to have a lot of physical props on a real set, which I respect in this overly green-screen era.     That said, if you don’t try and adhere to what makes the original so beloved then you’re not going to make anyone happy.

    The irony of my defense of FF16 is that I am, so far, actually preferring Rebirth. My enjoyment may or may not be nostalgia-driven. I also have to finish Rebirth first, as my estimation of FF16 decreased the further I got into the game. But at no point has it been apparent that the development of FF16 was ever “lazy.”
