Living in Minnesota, I'm very familiar with robins - and that picture really didn't look much like a robin to me either. So little like one, I actually missed that one.
My thought was perhaps that in the case of the Ponderosa Pine, the individual attracting MORE parasites drew more away from the populace in general - one trees 'sacrifice' saved the health of many more individuals.
