That photo is agonizing. I saw it when I was in bed with my toddler and held her extra tight.

I love In Other Words. I’m not criticizing them and I think their work is admirable. I’m just clarifying that they have not been in NE Portland for over two decades, as multiple people have claimed. They moved from a very white, very expensive part of town during a major period of gentrification.

Yes, as that screenshot states they moved to that location in 2006.

They’ve been there since 2006.

Totally. I don’t live in Portland anymore and can’t speak to their place in that community now. They were on Hawthorne for a long time and moved when they were priced out.

They’ve been there for ten years. I think it’s disingenuous to say they weren’t part of the gentrification of the early 2000s.

The diapers worked really well for my daughter and son, but the wipes were horrible.

It is revolting. I have a 2 year old and wish I could turn my brain off and block this story.

I also have a 2 year old, and this is truly the most sickening thing I can imagine. I honestly don’t know how you move on. I’ve been hugging my kids all day, and freaked out when my husband sent me a picture of our daughter near some water at the park (we’re in the SE and there are tons of alligators here).

I paid $175 for a sleep consultant to tell me to let my baby cry when she was still waking up hourly at 12 months. We did Ferber at 14 months and it saved my sanity. My toddler still isn’t a great sleeper, which I think is just part of her personality, but she puts herself to sleep and sleeps through the night most

Those podcasts are SO good.

Ugh, a guy did this to me when I was flying home from college once, a cross-country flight. I am still proud of myself for telling him to move back, because I was not a very assertive teenager. He was pretty huffy when I told him to move back.

I mean I do wear a lot of yoga pants. But mine are from Old Navy.

Same here. I have an MA and the cost of childcare for our two children far exceeds the income from my last job. I love staying home with them, but the finances of childcare was a major factor. We live pretty frugally on my husband’s salary, which is not large. I actually don’t know SAHMs in well-off families— everyone

Airbnb is nice when traveling with kids, mostly because of kitchens. We only rent entire houses and only places that are highly reviewed and advertise as family-friendly. Staying in a hotel room with a toddler sucks.

I had an IUD before having children and just had one inserted after having my second child, and neither insertion hurt at all.

Yeahhhhh, I thought I wanted 3, but 2 is a lot! Someone always needs something! My baby is only 3 months though- maybe when one of these kiddos is out of diapers I’ll feel differently.

Thanks! I have two now, oh my god.

The lack of distinction between Certified Nurse Midwives and lay midwives is confusing and frustrating. My daughter was delivered by an amazing CNM (in a hospital), and I hate to think that people like the midwife in this story are hurting the reputation of professional, educated midwives.

Ha, I am almost exactly the same. 34 with my first, 7 with the second.
