I don't think you realize how a gearbox works. It's a torque multiplier, you trade distance (rpms) for force (torque) in the first 4-5 gears. It can be easier that way, although it becomes more 'bigtoe-pinkytoe'ing than 'heel-toe'ing. A lot of race drivers will twist their foot to the side and do it this way rather than spin their foot to get just their heel over to the gas pedal....if that makes any sense at all.
