They have a musk gland thing, so they do indeed have a bit of a musk smell, but as long as you bathe them every so often (not too much; they have dry skin) and keep their litter clean, it's fine. I actually kinda like the smell.
In general, I strongly suggest learning everything you can about them (not kidding, "Ferrets for Dummies" is an excellent resource). They're rather particular animals and you have to be careful about what you feed them, what type of litter you use, etc.
This. They're highly social and need lots of interaction.
