Your k/d/a is only important if you're snowballing the enemy ADC by feeding. Even then if you're doing your job as a support that probably means you're dying so your ADC doesn't. This is sometimes a problem because if your ADC is horrible at positioning and doesn't pay attention it's going to make you look bad too.

I'd say like other positions a good support comes down to more than just positioning and timing. Most supports have awesome kits, even if those kits aren't centered around killing things. In any case I'd say that positioning and timing are important for every role, and not the only ways a support can contribute.
