On road courses, you want to keep the lightest touch possible on the wheel so that you keep your fingertips sensitive to the wheel's vibrations and feedback. Thumbs have nerves on their ends just like any other fingertip. You should be able to feel the wiggle of the tire tread as the blocks squirm against the tarmac.
