I’m not sure you replied to the correct person. I never mentioned anything about sci-fi, as obviously the Alien IP is sci-fi.

I mean, Facehuggers are kind of all about forcibly impregnating you so I don’t think it’s possible to avoid themes of sexual assault.

Yeah, I could be wrong. It’s just that in general, the horror-based Alien media typically only has one xenomorph.

Because the new movie is clearly a horror movie and Alien serves as a better foundation for a horror film. Presumably, there is only one xenomorph in the film so calling it Aliens wouldn’t make much sense either.

Isolation was a commercial failure. It was a great game but a stealth horror game is never going to be as successful as an action game (which is why the vast majority of Alien games are shooters). The most recent game in the franchise is Dark Descent which is based on Aliens. Before that was Fireteam Elite which,

If you were expecting OW2's PvE to measure up to games like BG3, FF16 or DD2, I’m pretty sure you would have been disappointed.

I don’t think Aliens has fallen in esteem at all. It’s still the most popular film in the IP. However, if you’re trying to make a horror film, Alien is a better foundation because it was actually a horror film while Aliens was more of an action film.

Not that surprising. Unlike “core” games, mobile games need to be advertised in places where non-gamers will actually see them. TV, theaters, streaming services, buses, billboards, etc. That’s way more expensive than just putting a trailer on IGN.

L4D isn’t horde mode. It has linear levels where you’re trying to get from point A to point B while completing various tasks that block your progression.

To be fair, Riot’s spin-off program was a bit of a failure and has since been discontinued. However, the spinoffs were made by random third-party developers and had minimal marketing.

Maybe I’m just overestimating people’s expectations. Anecdotally, all of the tacked on PvE content I’ve experienced in PvP games has been thoroughly underwhelming so I have no idea why people would get excited by it in OW2.

Most of the people here are saying that they wanted a PvE mode for worldbuilding and character development. Horde mode doesn’t really lend itself to that. Was anyone actually satisfied with the PvE stuff they did release..?

Building a good PvP mode for a PvE game is easier than building a good PvE mode for a PvP game. That’s why, to the best of my recollection, nobody has ever made a good PvE mode for a PvP game.

Key difference is that those games were built for SP and MP from day one for retail games that cost $50-60. OW was not. Hence my claim that PvE would be tacked on and not meet the scope and quality expected of a full-fledged SP/co-op game.

It’s not really a bold take at all. When was the last time a PvE mode added to a PvP game was in any way comparable to a full-fledged SP/co-op standalone game? I can’t think of a single one.

What’s up with The Quarry being console-only? I thought we were past that. It happened with Dead Island 2 as well but I’m hoping that’s only because of the EGS exclusivity deal and that it’ll be added to PC GP in April when said deal expires.

I feel like everyone is severely overestimating the scope and quality of this PvE mode. This would not be akin to a proper single-player/co-op game. It would be closer to a bot match with some half-assed cutscenes thrown in.

Are you suggesting that a tacked on PvE mode would provide the same experience as a standalone game built specifically for solo/co-op play? I certainly hope not as that would be silly. People want an epic, cinematic, story-driven experience. A half-assed PvE mode shoehorned into a PvP game isn’t going to provide that.

I agree. They want a proper, story-driven single-player/co-op game, not some tacked on PvE mode to an otherwise PvP game.

They made OW2 to renew interest in the IP and increase potential monetization by going F2P. Sequels generate far more hype than updates and microtransactions are far more profitable than single game purchases.
