One fine afternoon in Oxford, I was sitting on a bench by the canal, innocently reading a book. A woman and her toddler (who was walking and looked about 1 1/2 or 2) sit down right next to me. The woman gets a plastic potty out of her rucksack and undoes the girl’s trousers. I hear a distinct plop and get up to leave,

CALM DOWN

I had to do a similar thing. It felt terrible, but such a weird relief.

OH. MY. GOD.

I think several capillaries in my eyes burst on reading that.

I’m 22 and my concentration span is shot, so I work really inefficiently, meaning I often don’t have time to go looking for romance/sex. I’m not too bad looks-wise, but if it were possible to die of loneliness, I’d be six feet fucking under.

I loved this show so goddamn much. I am a raging snob and it was my secret, glorious sham. Nothing will ever suit pinot grigio and popcorn better.

I refuse to watch it with my mother. I think putting your foot down and watching separately is probably the right choice.

I am not too bad at Lady Things.

You thought you were alone, but He was shoving fives in your bra all along

You know we have Jews in England too, right? (I'm one)

Please could someone send some advice my way about how to cope with mingling?

When my ex-girlfriend dumped me, i methodically ate the (unworn) edible underwear she bought me as a form of exorcism.

All his daughters or just the one?

No, she's right. I am Upper-Middle class and I make a good few Upper class people fucking uncomfortable, no matter how well I play the game. We went to the same schools and universities, but we do not move in the same worlds.

I think she's very brave and sounds like an excellent person to be stuck in a tin can with.

I just googled young Joan Didion. She looks sad, but poised.

If one of us had had their daughter and husband die in the same year and had been diagnosed with MS, I think we'd probably look "stern" and "odd" too. As you point out, she's not the only person to have experienced tragedy, but that doesn't mean it won't take an a toll on your demeanour.
