BUTTS: A NOVEL BY TINA BELCHER

We out here telling people how to protest then we act surprised when nothing is accomplished while the Right plays the long game and ends up with what they want.

Margaret Atwood sourced Handmaid’s Tale from things happening around the world at the time she was writing in the early 1980's. There was no internet then so she cut articles out of newspapers or magazines and put them in a box. Authoritarian governments, religious extremism, women’s rights, fertility and the issues

Margaret Atwood is a white Canadian author who published the Handmaid’s Tale in 1985. Why would she try and write it from the perspective of an African American slave?

This article makes absolutely zero sense. The central conceit is that white people should stop identifying with the Handmaid’s Tale or using it as a symbol for the pro-choice movement because some black people don’t like the show, a show that attempts to right a wrong from the book by including people of color in the

if you are too dense to realize that a _large_ and influential wing of the GOP wants _exactly_ Gilead, then you are not paying attention.

No. The comparison is apt.  Strangely, not everything is reductive to “racism”.

If you don’t control everything that happens inside your own flesh, then you don’t own your own body. You don’t own your own life. Somebody else does.

When it comes to the underground railroad language you have a point. You do not have a point if you think comparing forced birth to slavery is racist. It’s an apt comparrison.

Kylie Jenner’s name was clearly inspired by Minogue’s, as were almost all Kylies that came after her. The audacity!

I don’t understand how getting kids interested in some bullshit scam helps the community.

Psychology shows comparing and contrasting things is a major path towards understanding and explaining things. While it certainly hurts a movement when people with racist conceptions or no editorial support make well-publicized pronouncements, turning off dialog is rarely a good answer.

I have, and other Black scholars have, made a link between abortion and slavery.  It is legitimate.  Control over a person’s family choices was a hallmark of slavery, and protection against such control is an aspect of the liberty that the Reconstruction Amendments protected after slavery’s overthrow.

Unfortunately, modern day black Americans, even if they are descendants of actual enslaved persons, do not have a cultural or moral lock on the term slavery.  There are actual enslaved persons today in fact that cannot claim their plight is the only type of chattel slavery for ever and all time.  Forced birth is

It is not chattel slavery. It is, however, involuntary servitude. The Thirteenth Amendment distinguishes between the two, and the Thirteenth Amendment banned both. You can’t compel a woman to carry a fetus to birth, increasing her chances of death in the process, without running afoul of the prohibition on involuntary

“Women who cannot make their own decisions about whether or not to have babies are enslaved because the state claims ownership of their bodies and the right to dictate the use to which their bodies must be put. ...

I feel sorry for young people who don’t know the sheer joy that is Kylie and her music. Ms. Jenner can collect all the billions she wants, she could never.

LOL Kylie be like bissshhhh I bought the URL a year before you were born!

You’re right, I did not remember that. I’d edit it if I could. For the record, however, my forgetting that was not an attempt to “tear them down” for being non binary. Just an honest mistake.

Ms. Minogue is the first and best Kylie.

Holy, way to bury the lede on that Ezra Miller story. The more I hear about this guy, the worse of a person he appears to be. I think we’ll see the Flash movie come out, since there’s already so much money and time invested in it, but I expect he won’t continue in the role after that.
