@nbergseng: I bet is was due to cost. Durable touch screens have been around for a long time, but I bet that the hard CRT surface, v.s. a flexible LCD system was chosen over perceived long term ware.

@Boognish: I bet the newer hiking version is more impervious, but the only thing that can prevent puncture vine from enter a foot is a thick soul, something that these shoes lack.
