I don't know, 32GB microSD cards are fairly common now. I have most of southern California (San Diego, OC, IE, LA, and a bit of the eastern desert) stored on my phone and it doesn't seem to take up very much space.

If you look at the location history in Google Maps (https://maps.google.com/locationhistor…) it can already tell when you're stationary, walking, or driving. It can probably figure out when you begin walking, and then associate the previous stationary point with your car.
