This is just so incredibly sad. I loved watching the Nats face him (even though, let’s face it, it was going to be a loss). He was so good, and his open love for playing was awesome. I loved his swagger, and everything about how he played the game.

I suspect that’s a pretty good explanation. I suspect that people don’t want to admit to themselves that is a possible explanation, so it’s overlooked for less divisive explanations. Certainly makes more sense than “hmm, all these fans sure seem tired of winning.”
