Not saying his “jokes” are no big deal, but the fact that the Patricia Arquette thing happened like last week and this happened four years ago is a bit of a factor.
I worked at a summer program once where there were kids (unrelated to each other) called India, China, Asia, Corea (pronounced Korea), and Tywon (pronounced Taiwan). Tywon hung out with Corea but apart from that they really all had nothing to do with each other.
I went to middle school with a guy called James Cameron, a friend’s mom is called Lauren Hill.
Hi! Definitely don’t think this is manufactured outrage, because I think at least some of the fury is actually coming from PoC (as opposed to whitesplaining “let me tell you what to be offended by” types), and that’s always legitimate regardless of how I feel about it.
Yeah, that comment adds some questionable context. Personally, I wouldn’t call this blackface per se, but knowing the Kardashians I would not be surprised if the blackface similarity was a calculated risk to generate controversy. If that’s the case, eff her, seriously - and I definitely wouldn’t put it past her.
Maybe this is a #thedress type problem, but it doesn’t look brown to me? I see straight-up purple. It’s darker than her skin but no black person has skin that color.
Yes, I’m aware that a great number of Christians have no zealous desire to convert people. But I believed (perhaps erroneously) that “convert everyone because this is the only true faith” is technically a part of Christian law/what the text of the religion encourages people to do.
Yes also that, I agree 100% in a practical sense. But I think it’s funny (in a not-actually-funny way) that technically speaking some freedoms are mutually exclusive.
Isn’t this technically true, though? Doesn’t Christianity come with evangelizing and conversion being held up as ideals as a pretty central part of the faith?
Honestly, anyone from any of the Abrahamic religions could refuse service to a woman unless she could prove she wasn’t on her period.
Unpopular opinion: I am okay with magazines refusing to photograph her because of her weight. I am not okay with people harassing her or telling her she looks disgusting, but whether it’s natural or not for her specifically, it’s a problem that extreme thinness is held up as an ideal. Teen girls looking at those…
I think either way, they are so wildly far off from being representative of what the average woman looks like that it's still a problem. Whether they're born with it or anorexic or a little of both, it shouldn't be the case that all famous women are underweight.
Where does that put quirky-lookin actors who acted well enough to convince everyone they were a sexpot and are now only regarded for "physical beauty" that doesn't really exist? Are you a good actor or a bad actor or just an imaginary bad actor?
It's sex, then baby, then netflix ;)
Yeah, my embarrassing first reaction to this was "what? You went to the cops for a boob grab? That's only a teeny bit of harassment!"
:(
Yeah, the social media thing is huge and I think it's secretly pushing a lot of cultural change. I know we all joke about how crazy people are on tumblr, but how awesome is it that there are websites where really really radical progressive people can talk to each other and respect each other's lived experiences (even…
I think it might have to do with who your parents were, but my middle brother (born '97) has fairly nuanced views that I think are representative of younger millennials. He's got this really fucking cute combination of good-old-days nostalgia with super egalitarian social views layered over that because idealizing…
