you would think with all the brilliant people working at google it would be easy to find someone to write up an algorithm that would at the very least compute for C in A^2 + B^2 = C^2. Where A = flat distance and B = elevation change

I cannot tell for certain but it looks like this doesn't take into account elevation. This could throw off the accuracy for anyone that lives in the mountains.
