2nd Gear: I was about to post a snarky comment about how I bought a nicely loaded Ranger XLT in ‘98 for $18k, then I remembered I should run it through an inflation calculator first. The result: $27,876.

It is a balancing act of needs vs wants. There are plenty of conveniences that you technically don’t need, but they make daily driving significantly easier. Agree with the truck analogy. If you’re going to shell out that much money, it’s a waste if you aren’t regularly using it for it’s designed purpose.

How do you expect me to impress my neighbors, and the random people I pass, in a car that fits my budget? I have short comings to overcome. 

A big issue here, IMO, is manufacturers only offer things in packages.
