If you allow the messages to be viewed in the notification bar, you can read the text and decide whether or not to “mark as read”. Sometimes I (introvert) use that strategically, as if any of my friends are staring at their phones waiting to see the exact time I read their text.

I’d much rather have a 180char message ding my phone once on RCS, than get a double notification for the last snippet of message on SMS.
