I think it's helpful if you point it out as a means to clarify a point. Instead of "Hey! That's an ad hominem fallacy!" I usually say "Could you elaborate more? That doesn't seem to add up because it focused on Public Figure X rather than the subject we're debating."
Fallacies can be powerful rhetorical tools, especially if paired alongside valid claims and evidence.
It sounds like your friend is just being an asshole, and using fancy terms s/he learned in PHIL 101 to silence you.
It's only a fallacy if you point out a fallacy to disprove the entire argument.
Valid - "That one point you made makes no sense, since it was just a personal attack on that person..."
Fallacious - "Your entire argument is moot, since you made a personal attack on that person..."
Which is a fallacy in itself.
