I have always found that a dress that's fitted in the bodice, to accentuate a small waist, and looser in the hips, to make the hip width visually ambiguous (I don't want to say 'disguise wide hips' because it's like wide hips are something terrible and disgusting that we should be covering with much cloth, which ugh…

Pretty sure it's deliberate — lots of runway clothes show nips, but I expect once you get one of those outfits, you also get it lined or you wear more underneath than just your skin. Unless you're J Lo.
