Of those two I feel like it has to be the latter. I would think his death would’ve drawn enough attention from westerners who know Japanese that details in Japanese language news coverage wouldn’t have gone under the radar.
Especially since this game is basically a clone of the Avengers game, which did the exact same thing with Captain America.
I can understand the confusion. A lot of the most well-known indie games use a retro art style and it’s not so obvious what “indie” is an abbreviation of. If someone’s not at all into video games, I could see thinking that “indie” means 80s/90s style 2D games.

The word “GIF” and how its used is a really interesting example of how technical terms change meaning over time.
In the US we’re most familiar with Mexican-style chorizo, but chorizo can refer to a lot of different sausages. It’s possible she’s talking about Spanish or Portugese chorizo; I don’t know what’s popular in Ireland.
For some reason I was under the impression that this was a live service game, and I didn’t realize it wasn’t until I saw this article.
They did the same thing for Election Day in 1996. The clue was what the next day’s headline would be, and either “CLINTON ELECTED” or “BOB DOLE ELECTED” would work. It was controversial because of course people assumed only one of those would fit the puzzle.
Didn’t the plot of Sonic Adventure 2 involve Sonic being framed for bank robberies?
IIRC, the Big Mac started out as a ‘menu hack’ by one of the franchises.
