Yep, and being the entire subframe assembly, they have no idea how long it will stand the stress of being a car. There have been plenty of companies that have had issues with frames rotting (and replacement on those is relatively easy), imaging if these started cracking after x miles.

In order to make a gear (for example) that needed to be extra durable, the standard machining process would be to machine the gear to shape while its material is in a softer state, then through a chemical/heat process they harden…

It is true that steel bodied cars crack too, but if you get a crack in a suspension mount, the fix is to replace the suspension mount.

If your car’s unibody is a single cast and you get a crack in it, the fix is to replace the car.

You can weld stamped steel for a quick fix or weld in a “Fix” if you figure it out before production. Much cheaper than a new die. 

Welding steel sheet metal is a hell of a lot easier than welding cast aluminum. It is also much easier to repair sheet metal post-accident than aluminum castings. It’s just another thing that will lead to more disposable vehicles.

But virtually all of those cracks in steel chassis are reparable. Cracked or bent aluminum castings are not.

As with most Elon Musk sourced/derived/related news, I assume this won’t happen until it’s happening.

The few decent cops I’ve known either had to change departments multiple times to find one that wasn’t corrupt as fuck or just straight up left the profession, basically the people they need to attract and retain not run off are the ones that seem to leave.
