If you want to map the vocabulary of AI and futurism onto contemporary philosophy, substitute "telos" for "terminal value." #convergence

When I attempted to register as an adult volunteer, the registration form asked that I affirm my belief in a higher power. Should I have lied?

You keep on kicking ass though :)

I think that "looking good" is a complex matter, so I wouldn't want to give it an easy or half-baked answer. My point was, the author of this post seems to be aligning "being an editor at Marie Claire" with "going out into the world kicking ass and look[ing] damn good doing so." There's an overlap between working for

Surely "looking good" and "buying into the commercialization and commodification of appearances" aren't synonymous?

How do you, personally, square the mission of trying to instruct young people to be active, thoughtful, and informed, with the exclusion of atheist Scouts and Scouters and gay Scouters? I guess a related question is: what do you think Scouting will look like in 10 years — or, what do you want it to look like?

There are a lot of Scouters working from the inside to address that policy. That said, as long as the LDS continues to pay out of pocket for the membership fees for all Mormon Scouts, it's going to be difficult to persuade the folks at the top to adopt a change.

You forgot: "Boy Scouts taught me that you can't be a good person without believing in supernatural deities and the superiority of heteronormativity."

The tough part is, I agree with everything else you wrote. If only there were leaders in the BSA of strong enough character to call for an end to the discriminatory

There are several other smaller organizations. But the prohibition on nontheist Scouts and Scouts participating in the BSA has long been a bizarre throwback policy.

Sure, I can do the swimming. But being an atheist means I certainly couldn't take the test as a Scouter. We aren't wanted, you see.

Re: "gerontacracy":

"Sometimes the rules serve a good purpose, was what I meant, even if they are unpopular."

"it's not that black and white."

"I think she decided she wanted to do her own thing, got busted, and is now upset."

From a recent journalistic film chronicle of life among the youth, Superbad: "Just imagine if girls weren't weirded out by our boners and they actually wanted to see `em..."

"Crusading against rules just because you don't like them..."

So... where can we donate to give this girl a hell-yeah grant toward her college education? Because I think we should be rewarding the kind of character she's shown in this situation.

Sounds like you have something to say about this. Would you consider writing a post with your perspective, on your own Kinja page, and starting a conversation that displays the kind of empathy you say is lacking here?

"Do you believe it is true that X?"
"Depends on what you mean by 'X'."
