I volunteered in a slum in Phnom Penh for three weeks, including quick trips to Sihanoukville and Siam Reap, and had no problems at all. It's like anywhere I guess ... could be terrible, could be amazing. Taking money out inside banks instead of at street ATMs is a good idea anytime you can, though.
