I volunteered in a slum in Phnom Penh for three weeks, including quick trips to Sihanoukville and Siam Reap, and had no problems at all. It's like anywhere I guess ... could be terrible, could be amazing. Taking money out inside banks instead of at street ATMs is a good idea anytime you can, though.

I am a teacher in Ireland, where 90%+ schools are Roman Catholic. I am Jewish, and occasionally feel a little uncomfortable when I am in a staff meeting which begins with everyone crossing themselves and saying the Lord's Prayer, but it's not a big deal.

I hear you. Laughter is a totally normal defensive reflex. Laughing defuses situations and is an automatic reaction when something is unusual/unexpected. I have situations in my past where I laughed when I should have ran screaming, and it took a long time to realise that my laughter didn't make me complicit/guilty…
