I used to have a rule that I would switch from driving to flying at about 300 miles. That is about 5 hours of driving, and when you add the time of airport lines, etc, it is usually about the same either way. Farther than that it is quicker to fly.
But then, after all the headaches they added: extra lines, extra time,

I’m fine with VW being evil (let’s face it, they all are. Maybe Tesla is ok?), but isn’t maintenance and repair prohibitively expensive? Same goes for the mini countryman w/ manual. And the outback is huge and slow, now.
Sliiiiim pickens, indeed.
Japan and europe are full of great manual wagons. Come on, Murika!!

I am terribly disappointed in myself, who read this three times before the subtleties sunk in, but I am very impressed with you now that your subtleties have finally penetrated me.

7 is dumb. Especially since (I’ll be dollars to donuts) the final gear is probably geared the same ratio as a 5 speed: to go 55mph at 2200rpm (AKA - useless in actual highway driving after 1982).
Somebody at Jalopnik wrote an article about that about 6 months ago (apologies no link). The best number of gears is 5.

White base, black, gray, red trim ... just looks great.
An oddball car can be appealing, but most of ‘em look like crap. Let’s keep it white-black-gray-red classy, people, don’t hate.

You know, I honestly don’t understand why there is such resistance to innovative door hinge designs. Somebody started a rumor that you can trap people in their Deloreans if you park close and the general public just ate it up and wont let go 40 years later. The open-radius is actually SMALLER than a regular door AND

I think demographics plays a large part. And GMs stupid decisions play a large part. The 2010 car was too heavy (3800 lbs), the 2014 redesign was lighter but boring (those tail-lights, ugh), the new redesign is expensive and has too many stupid confusing versions (1Lt, 2Lt, “2.0 Turbo 1Le” ??? wtf is that?).

But I

Silly computers, they didn’t even tell me that they know what they’ve got!

Suuuure, what could go wrong?

They just (18 months or so) put one of these near my house in Gainesville VA, and it is abysmal! It is totally bizarre and snarls traffic to a standstill nearly 24 hours a day. The only way I can imagine it being safer is that now I don’t use that road any more, so ... I’ll get in an accident somewhere else instead?

I’ve asked this once before and gotten no reply, but why does Gizmodo hate Elon Musk so much?
It’s like you guys just sit around the NY office talking smack, seething with hatred, toward the guy. I searched “why Gizmodo hate Elon Musk” but it only brought up a list (all first 10) of Gizmodo (et al) headlines hating on

Please, everyone, for the love safety and keeping your children alive, PLEASE never put your kids in the back of a convertible with no roll bars!
I mean, why even bother with car seats?! Might as well just toss ‘em in the back of a pickup with a blanket. /s

Why are Gizmodo pages all very anti-Musk? I’m rather ambivalent on the topic, but I’m very curious why stories slant so heavily in that one direction.

Any news on what “tweaks” they did to the engine to get more HP? Is it simply raising the rev limit, thereby enabling the HP curve to go higher at its peak? If so, that wouldn’t really affect speed until you get to the higher revs, right?

“In the grand scheme of things they don’t really matter.”
True that. Thanks for putting the sensibility in there. I would love to see some data/comparos about which cars and/or mods make the biggest differences in the real world. Like, would a small 4-banger be similarly affected? What if the car had a turbo with a

I’m with you, Torch. ...for once.
Now tell me more about that goat...

It is better than counting sheep!

I can tell you, if you call Verizon (FIOS) to complain that your 50 Mbps connection regularly yields 42 they will tell you that speeds aren’t guaranteed and they will do nothing about it. BUT you could always upgrade to a more expensive plan with a longer contract. Their “gigabit” connection will definitely give you

This movie already looks better, BY FAR, than TLJ. That movie was a steaming pile. I’m talking, “Life Day” bad. There is now competition for worst StarWars movie. That is pretty sad.
