A cookie is not all that much better to deprive a kid of! These kids are seriously deprived and that cookie probably looks unbelievably tempting- it would even to a kid who has tons of food available to him/her. I’m going to go ahead and guess you’ve never explored adoption options. Adopting as a single woman, it would have been cheaper, faster, and less parental-rights entangled to adopt abroad. In short, it is frequently more practical to adopt abroad rather than in the US.
