Orienting to the center certainly worked in 2016. A democratic candidate with a centrist campaign platform hasn’t won since Bill Clinton. It still won't work. 

Or you could offer a candidate that can actually earn the votes necessary to win an election. Bernie and his base don't want your candidate. That's OK. You don't want their candidate. That's OK. Because you can't compromise, everyone gets Trump.
