Unfortunately, this parody is a little too spot on for me. I thought Benji was fairly unique and had some great moments, but Kozelek's new style seemed kinda stale on Universal Themes.

I suppose… but the production on the SST records isn't a deal-breaker for me. I was referring to the songs themselves (more pop — less hardcore) rather than the production.
Zen Arcade might be a difficult point of entry for Husker Du… Flip Your Wig or New Day Rising are more accessible and might be a better place to start.
I'm not familiar with much of his work, but if there was an award for absolutely nailing small roles in comedic films, he should have won for his appearances in both The Other Guys and I Love You, Man. I thought he was a highlight in both movies.

Not to be that guy, but their best stuff (The Lonesome Crowded West and The Moon and Antarctica) came out in the 90s. "Float On" is a sort demarcation in their career, though they've (sporadically) put out some good songs after that point. However, I think their last album (Strangers) was fairly bland.
