I get that Latino and Latina both imply gender, but I thought that using Latin was an acceptable contraction of the two.

It’s gender neutral, but is a diversity-flattening made-up word (for the census) that paints all “hispanics” (such as the word attempts to describe) as the same people, which makes it a prejudiced word, not an “inclusive” one like many people would like to say it is.
