Well, "highly functioning" is pretty relative. The amount of energy that sometimes goes into just functioning could be spent a lot better being brilliant but odd. I only know Asperger's as "Highly Functioning Autism", so it has been on the spectrum for quite a while (at least since 2007), which is also reflected in most of the popular aspie sites.
