I have split hair central, but I have heard that trimming it every three months helps. Just the shortest of trims.

Do you have a Ross or Marshalls near you? They always have cheap, nice luggage that won’t break your bank. Just know that all your luggage has to do is hold your stuff and not break apart. No need to buy any locks, either, since the TSA opens them all, anyway.
