At the very least, it appears that this is referring to digital copies that Funimation paired with its physical copies, so they do still own them. I didn’t know distributors still did that sort of thing, but I haven’t bought physical media in ages, let alone anything from Funimation.

I sincerely doubt that was true in the early years of Star Trek and Star Wars. Those name percolated into society eventually, but definitely not in the first ten years or so of their existence. Countless grandmas were probably trying to buy Dirk Badder toys for their grandchildren even into the 90s.
