I did this a while back on a USB 2.0 Flash drive. The harddrive in my computer literally gave out and all I had were the recovery disks and a 16gb flash drive. the install worked, however it was slow, almost unusable, in addition to using most of the flashdrives read/write cycles.

I feel old.

Oh jeeze, the Inspiron 1505e. This PC has some miles behind it. Works great still under linux though (Ubuntu Natty). Just some issues finding the drivers for the screen and the wireless card, however the fixes are permanent and it works just like new.
