No, I don’t think so. From what I’ve read, the rendering issue is purely with Notifications. From screenshots I’ve seen in other comments, the text string renders just fine in iMessage or other apps! As long as Notifications are off, or stripped down to just the sender’s name (no text preview), you’ll be fine.

Hmmmm...I’d imagine it would not. That probably explains why my phone hasn’t been crashing, as all my friends are heavy redditors and would have seen this—and are a bunch of dicks, so naturally would be trying it out on everyone they could.

It’s a bug with the notifications. It can’t render that particular text, so gives up (crashes). This is why it only works if the victim isn’t already in a conversation with the sender (notification center doesn’t need to alert you to a new text in a convo you’re already in).
