I've found a combination of OpenDNS and DD-WRT suites my needs well. The former to block specific websites and categories. The latter to shut my wi-fi down at midnight.

I like McKnights Roth IRA suggestion. It's a good compromise between a conservative 401k and taking a huge chance managing stocks yourself. There are some high-risk/high-return funds you can choose from.

Another vote for PCLinuxOS. My experience has been very similar. Package requests are granted in a timely manner as well.

This should be the distro of choice for any Linux beginner coming from Windows.
