Depends on the planet. 80% of planets are going to be barren rocks. A further 15-18% will be desert/forest/tundra/plains and fairly interesting to explore. Only that remaining 2-5% will be tropical/jungle/garden type planets that they’ve been showing in trailers. But when you get one of those, man it’s a breathtaking…

I’ve had better luck with planet types after figuring out system classes. Based on start color: yellow (G/F) > red (K/M) > green (E) > blue (O/B).

Occasionally you’ll find planets with vast veins of rock jutting out into the air all over the place, collecting into a sort of capillary-like network. Very cool, prog-rock vistas.
