There is absolutely no excuse; any talk about it being “more difficult” to render curly hair (in a 2D avatar ESPECIALLY) or dark skin are lies. The only reason a game company wouldn’t include dark skin and curly hair is because they simply don’t care. It’s despicable.

Late response but if you like sci fi and want to try LeGuin, I highly recommend “The Birthday of the World.” It’s a collection of short stories, so you can dip a toe in. Also they’re all amazing.
