I think some of it might be to do with commuting to work. If you've got a long train journey, then something like Puzzle & Dragon or Monster Strike you can pretty much play with your one free hand (if you're standing). I've seen people of all ages playing PaD on the trains.

I've played it for about the past 10 months or so and have been mostly enjoying it. Content is clearable without paying, you'll just need to be patient most of the time.
