You might enjoy Kenshin? Although it's probably better to read it. The Trust & Betrayal OVA is fantastic though. (I know this isn't new at all...)

Peak in terms of sales / popularity, rather than quality. I don't think there's been anything since which seemed as big as K-On! did at the time?

For me personally, there was a bunch of things I watched as a kid at various times, but probably didn't really get into things until Uni.

Some of it's probably reflected by their age. It seems to be split between evergreen classics like Doraemon and Dragonball, and the hot shows from X years ago, like Madoka, Haruhi etc.

None of the entries particularly surprise me. They're all popular well known series, more or less. Higurashi is probably the biggest outlier, and even that's pretty well known.

Must have missed that news. Should do well for them.

I meant not in Japan. It sells loads in Japan, but it's somehow gone unlicensed for anything beyond streaming outside of Japan.

Well we could just call them anime...

I highly recommend Tatami Galaxy, and I think plenty of the others here would recommend Ping Pong (which I've yet to see). Yuasa is very distinctive, and it doesn't look at all like your typical anime.

Shonen / Shojo labels are fairly arbitrary now anyway, it's simply a reflection of the magazine it runs in. You wouldn't for example peg Black Butler as being Shonen, given all its female fans.

Chihayafuru is an anime about a competitive traditional Japanese poetry card game.

Word(inappropriate use of semi-colon)Word.

(By which I mean Chaos;Head)

Nozaki is actually aimed at guys (it's Shonen), despite what the contents might appear to be. It's also my favourite of the season.

In Japan, apparently the number of people buying discs is fairly static, so they're trying to milk the hardcore fans for as much as possible.

Actually it was sort of covered in here:

Might be the sort of thing to send Justin on ANN for his Answerman column. He probably has a much better idea of things than most people (or knows the people to ask).

Looking at this page for TV shows I assume?

That's a lot of anime. A graph of the ups and downs might be interesting.

Is this just TV anime? Because it gets harder to account for OVAs + movies, and how to weight them...
