I agree. I like the drifting itself, not that they can ruin a set of rear tires in 20 minutes (or less). Maybe some harder compound could fix that. Also the smoke isn’t really healthy (for the driver and spectators). It’s cool what they do though.

A niche Corvette SUV will never bring GM enough money to make a difference. Their cash cow is BOF trucks and SUVs.
Cayenne gets a pass because they didn’t name it a 911; which is what making a Chevrolet Corvette SUV would be.
Urus gets a pass because Lamborghini had the legendary LM002; plus they started as a tractor company.
They should make an SUV that looks inspired by the Corvette, but why not just name it its own thing; the…
The thing is that Corvette isn’t a separate brand, it’s an entity within Chevrolet. That means the brand already has a ton of its own crossovers, and that’s before you get into GM trying to make Cadillac sportier and future-focused. A Corvette SUV is going to step on toes in ways that the premium models you mention…
I get it, but “no dice” doesn’t come close to elucidating a “what the hell are they thinking?” / bad decision connotation, it sounds more like a near miss to me.
I miss the old title of the column, what prompted the change?
Except...there is a way around it. Make it so that the hood ornament retracts into the radiator shell when it detects an impact. Rolls-Royces already do this. Any other car could too. Sure, it would make it more expensive, but this is a Mercedes we’re talking about. It’s already expensive.
Luckily we replaced hood ornaments with 9 additional square feet of grille, and 2000lbs additional mass so that the pedestrians can’t escape even though they haven’t been harpooned.
It might be an example of how you don’t want things to be too strong. If the cab was bolted down better, the steel would have sliced through it instead of just pushing the cab to the point the mounts break and it just gets pushed forward. You see it with suspension parts. If they’re too strong, instead of a bent…
There is a reason the first part of the sentence is “like many cultures”.
You think that a 4500lb Camry with 30 more horsepower will be faster than a 2800lb YarisGR?
I don’t doubt that the car isn’t as safe as some others on the road.
However, something i really dislike is that a 1 star car from the late 90s, early 2000s means that you’re either dead or lost some limbs.
Meanwhile, this thing seems safer than many 0 or 1 star cars from 15 years ago, and only gets 1 star?
I would…
This is a zero star? Maybe the standards for a zero star have gotten raised quite a bit, I remember those old Daewoo NHSTA videos that were horrific, and as an insurance adjuster I am not super familiar with how bad a hit at this speed should look but I have seen a lot worse things in my time and these look pretty par…
NCAP star ratings only tell part of the story. The goalposts have moved hugely in the last 20 years so a car that previously scored well will score badly if retested. The Fiat Punto scored 5 stars for adult and 3 for child protection when originally tested in 2005, in 2017 it scored 0 stars for literally the same car.
Very handy to note: somewhere in the last few years NCAP decided to seriously crank up the star requirements. Now if you cannot get safety assists, it’s an automatic zero. Safety assists optional but not standard? 3 starts max.
Remember the Fiat Punto? Was 5 stars in 2005, now 0 in 2017. Same car, still pretty safe.…
And yet this car is MUCH safer than the ‘84 Jetta GLI that I put 200K miles on. And that car was probably “safer” than the ‘89 Ford Escort that I had a 65mph T-bone crash in and walked away with a bruised shoulder. From forcing the door open after the crash. It’s also in another universe from the Triumph Spitfire I…
Yeah no, more hate on the wannabe fascist and his supporters at all times, please and thanks.
You mean it doesn’t look grotesque and exaggerated, and that isn’t enough because the car has to communicate excitement if they put in a low revving turbo 4 and numb electric steering. I appreciate your point of view.
There really isn’t any ambiguity here, Turning Point USA is a bunch of evil trolls who are trying to corrupt the vote. They’re a lot like “Project Veritas,” a bunch of junior KKK members who shit all over themselves all the time but get support money from the grand wizards anyway. If Pratt follows them it leaves no…
I’m going to go with higher-psi turbos (effectively increasing displacement), higher RPM (flat crank, and V8 maybe better balanced than the W16), more optimal injection mapping and improved Aero. That said, this record is incremental- it’s a massive leap above the Koenigegg’s. Wildly impressive! Make ‘murica great…
